Frequently Asked Questions
What does WiFi Mean?
Short for wireless fidelity, the term WiFi is used generically
when referring to any type of 802.11 network."
Why is WiFi so prevalent?
After the success of Ethernet as a high-speed, low-cost Local
Area Network (LAN) protocol, LANs have had tremendous growth,
showing up everywhere from the largest corporations to the
home. People have come to rely on network connectivity to
share files, devices, and Internet access. Today, mobile computing
has become exceedingly prevalent with the low cost of notebook
computers and Personal Digital Assistants (PDAs). Such mobile
users resent the necessity of a network cable to access shared
resources, as it inhibits the mobility of the device. Users
demand two fundamental features in any technology: transparency
(i.e. ease of use) and functionality (i.e. a clear solution
to a problem they regularly encounter). A user wants a way
to supersede the necessity of a network cable with a wireless
technology that is cross-vender interoperable (i.e. not proprietary)
and provides similar performance to which they are accustomed.
Why do I need WiFi?
Whether you’re running a manufacturing operation or
school, a restaurant or an apartment complex or any other
type of business, WiFi can streamline your operations, provide
added convenience and impact your bottom line. WiFi allows
you to connect to shared network resources and the Internet
from anywhere within the range of a base station. The connection
can be open, or secure and it’s always fast. In fact,
it's several times faster than the fastest cable modem connection.
How do I choose the right equipment?
WiFi networking equipment is available for a wide array of
applications, from home networking to large industrial installations.
Selecting the right equipment is important and doing so requires
that you consider just how you want to use your network, where
you want to access it and more. It’s a good idea to
think through all the details before you select your equipment
and often times a network design consultant is called for
to ensure the network solution you purchase will meet your
needs.
Will my wireless network be secure?
Any time you communicate over the Internet – whether
using a wired or wireless connection - you need to consider
the security of your network. Securing your network does not
have to be complicated. There are a number of approaches to
ensure your files and communications remain protected, including
Wi-Fi Protected Access, changing your password or network
name (SSID), closing your network or more sophisticated technologies
and techniques to further secure your business network. Whether
you're looking for a simple solution or enterprise security,
it’s a good idea to educate yourself or work with a
professional to minimize risk.
